My First Cosplay! (Western Qualifier, Masters of Cosplay, Calgary Expo 2018)

So, I’ve been a costume guy for as long as I can remember, but “cosplay” is something relatively new to me, and so are comic expos. I’ve been to the last two or three, and even dressed up for one, but I was waaaaay too unsure to enter a contest.

This year, I saw that Calgary Expo was holding a larger event this year, a Western Qualifier for the Masters of Cosplay competition, and I thought, eh, why not apply? I honestly didn’t think I’d get selected.

But lo and behold, my “Fat” suit from the Weird Al video was one of the 60 chosen to compete!

It was an amazing experience, and if you’re into costuming, it’s something I would highly suggest you try for yourself. It’s a ton of work, a very busy day, and a lot of waiting, but I learned a lot about costuming, presentation skills, and got to see some of the best designs up close and personal.

If you’re wondering what the day would be like, this is one man’s perspective of the behind-the-scenes of this particular day at this particular contest.

Thanks to everyone who stopped me to say hello, or say something nice about my costume. It was all greatly appreciated!

I’ll be back next year, I think – and I’ve been inspired to go above and beyond, and really push myself next time!
