I Flew 5,300km in 24 Hours to Grade a Gretzky Rookie Card

Bear with me, everyone. I know this is a departure from my usual programming, but this one means something a little bit more than the average video, and it’s been a labour of love to create and edit this video. If you have the half hour to spare, my hope is that you’ll find it worth your time.

As you may have gathered from the last Tim Horton’s card video, collecting hockey cards has been an interest of mine since I was a small child. My dad and I would go to card shows, and it was my job to go around, organizing trades to complete our Upper Deck base sets. But even prior to that, my dad was collecting cards in the late 70s and early 80s, which meant he had a Wayne Gretzky rookie card in his collection.

After going to these shows, and looking up the values in Beckett Monthly, this card has been safely stored away, but the recent surge in cards again got me wondering just how good of condition this card really was in – and how could I help to keep it that way?

This video is a story of 5,300km travelled across Canada and back within 24 hours, but it’s a story that’s been decades in the making. And in the end, the value isn’t in the monetary value of the card. It’s the story.
