I recently picked up a lovely cilt (it’s a Welsh kilt, but there’s no K in the Welsh language) from the fine folks over at Wales Tartan Centre (https://www.welsh-tartan.com). It’s a lovely combination of Stampeder red and CFL turf green, so I may wear it to a Calgary Stampeders home game one of these days (here’s hoping the 2021 season works out!)
But as I’m a bit of a costume guy when it comes to Stamps games, I thought that my regular day sporran might be a little bit simple. Maybe I could get one made from a football? Alas, the only one I could find online was made in 2007, special order by Marcus Eagleton, for Lawrence Tynes of the NY Giants (I found out about this one long after I had finished sewing up my own sporran, thinking I had done something new. Turns out, there’s nothing new on the Internet!)
So, thanks to the fine folks at the Calgary Stampeders, who hooked me up with a fine leather CFL ball, I spent nearly a week destroying and resewing the leather into a somewhat serviceable (if somewhat lumpy) sporran. And of course, I had to share the results with you folks! Now, I’m not a leather worker, nor a professional sewer. I didn’t work from a pattern, or really plan this out at all. Just sewed by the seat of my pants. So, yes, it’s not the prettiest, and it’s not the best design. But for a first effort on a lot of fronts, I think it turned out not half bad!
