My Blink camera out front started going off in the wee hours of the morning, capturing a few nocturnal visits from the friendly neighbourhood skunk (I can call him that because he didn’t spray me). At first, he was just sauntering by, but soon enough, he discovered a gap under my front steps, and I was worried he might try to set up shop there. I didn’t want him there, but I didn’t want to call a pest control company to come and potentially hurt the little guy. He wasn’t doing anything wrong!
So, I did what I always do – I went to Amazon. There were plenty of products in the $30-50 range, including something that looked like road salt, some coyote urine, and other things I didn’t really feel like spreading around my house. But then I saw the Predator Eye products.
There are motion sensitive lights that flash little red spots when something scurries by, meant to simulate the glint in the eye of a hungry predator. But it got me to thinking – I have a bunch of red LEDs in the basement. What’s to stop me from making my own “predator eye” deterrent for a few pennies?
So, I taped two LEDs to a coin battery, and placed it near the “mouth” of the entrance under the stairs. And while a sample size of one isn’t enough to claim that this is a perfect deterrent, it seemed to do the trick for this particular little stinker.
